A Slice of Italy at Margherita NYC

By: Finance Foodie

On most weekends, the Mister and I head to south to Chinatown for some satiating noodles and dumplings. However, we decided to mix it up this weekend and veer West to neighboring Little Italy to check out Margherita NYC, a Southern Italian shop known for their brick oven pizzas and rich pastas.

The resto gave me a warm rustic feel as soon as I walked in, with yellow hued lamps on the wall, cherry wood tables, exposed brick and a gigantic old school brick oven in the back where you can watch your pizzas being made.

Seeing fiery brick oven, we knew we had to try the pizzas - I had the namesake Margherita ($15) with added aged Prosciutto ($3) and the Mister had the Prosciutto e Fungi ($17).

When I first walked in, I was a bit nervous this resto would be yet another "tourist trap" eatery that pervade Little Italy. After one bite of my Margherita (+ Prosciutto) pizza, I felt bad for even thinking that because the pizza was so good! The crust had a nice chewy consistency with a light signature smoky brick oven taste, the San Marzano tomato sauce was vibrant with a touch of sweetness, and the fragrant Prosciutto was generously layered on top. The Mister's Prosciutto e Fungi  (basically the Margherita with mushrooms and parmacotto ham) was also very tasty - the mushrooms really brought out the flavor of the sauce and the mozzarella.

As the pizzas were quite filling, we did not have the appetite to try one of their traditional Italian desserts. We will be back soon for sure - as next week (January 24-28th), Margherita will be bringing in Giuseppe Costa, a Michelin starred chef from Italy, to prepare a $100 / person four-course, wine-paired dinner (reservations can be made at margheritanyc@gmail.com or by phone at 212-226-8391).
