Blown Away at Harbour House Restaurant and the Inn at Mystic

Now that Fashion Week has finally past, I was in desperate need of detox weekend where I could get away from the hustle and bustle and surround myself with the beauty of trees and greenery. Therefore, when the proprietors of the Inn at Mystic invited me to check out the place for the night and have a fresh seafood dinner at their restaurant on site -- well considered me checked in already!

This past Saturday, the Mister and I packed our bags, jumped on the Amtrak and headed to the lovely seaside town of Mystic, Connecticut. A quick 2.5 hours later we were in Relaxtown, USA – what a difference Mystic was from the mean streets of the Big Apple. No dirty mystery sidewalk water or pushy cell phone texting while walking New Yorkers in sight – just pristine blue waters, clear bright sunshine and friendly smiling faces all around!

The Inn itself is cute, quaint and seaside chic. I had read some ermm…not so great reviews of the place pre-renovation, so I was hoping for the best – but also expecting the worst. Our room was most definitely the former – it filled with a plush king sized bed, a lovely balcony overlooking the harbor, and brand new carpeting.

I was a bit disappointed that there was no Jacuzzi in our bathroom (which looked like it was not renovated) – but overall, we were very pleased with the comfort and cleanness of the place.

Whole Maine Lobster

The real gem was the Harbour House restaurant. I was expecting a traditional run of the mill hotel restaurant, but I was highly impressed by the quality and freshness of the food – without the Big City prices. Being in a seaside town, I had to get the Whole Maine Lobster ($35), which was perfectly steamed and tasted like it was caught that morning.

Stonington Harbour Bommers

The Stonington Harbour Bommers ($12), juicy scallops wrapped with slab smoked bacon in a pomegranate molasses glaze, was another highlight – the juxtaposition of the salty bacon and the sweet glaze provided just the right kick to the neutral flavored scallops.

Kayaking Fun

To cap off our visit, we took the property’s kayaks (complimentary for guests of the hotel) out for a peaceful and romantic spin around Mystic Harbor. As we were only there for a weekend, we did not have time to check out the town.  Given this past weekend's fantastic preview, I look forward to my next Big City getaway to Mystic and to exploring the area in more depth.
