Super Saturday is one of the most popular events every year in the Hamptons—not just because it brings out the Hamptons A-List crowd and provides plenty of designer bargains to attendees…but because it helps benefit the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. Kelly Ripa has been the host for several years now (helping the event get plenty of advanced coverage on daytime TV) and this year’s co-hosts were Covergirl spokeswoman Paula Patton, Donna Karan and InStyle Magazine’s Ariel Foxman. Ripa and the staff of QVC—who have been longtime sponsors of the event—broadcast live from the event as guests who paid $450 to $650 per head dined on exquisite Italian cuisine at Nova’s Ark Project provided by the legendary Sant Ambroeus and scoured for bargains. Along the way, they were handed samples from lots of fun vendors who had their own stands behind the white tent set up for the actual sale part of the festivities—there were plenty of cutting edge beverages from folks like Zico coconut water, Mamma Chia chia seed drinks, Titan Tea and Guarana Energy drinks.
The gorgeous food by Sant Ambroeus included a tremendous asparagus, grape tomato and parmesan salad, grilled lamb chops, six types of pasta with homemade sauces, gourmet burgers and an assortment of their beautiful homemade fruit tarts and gelatos that were worth coming back for several times. I also admit to not being able to resist the sundae stand offered by Carvel over by the rides—and the giant bags of Brownie Brittle and Pasta Chips being handed out at their respective stands! (I actually crunched up some Brownie Brittle and put it on my vanilla Carvel ice cream, which I haven’t had in over 20 years!)
Celeb-wise, I personally only spotted Kelly Ripa at the sale—as well as the QVC hosts. (My head was too much into the sale to notice celebs.) About 500 people attended the event, and it was lovely that free rides including a ferris wheel and merry-go-round were set up for guests under 12. Prices went down as time went on and I had to go to all my favorites to get the bottom barrel prices. Prices generally start on the decline around 3:30 and then at 6, people are either packing up their products to sell next year or nearly giving them away. Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe’s popular “Dressing A to Zoe” booth was as great as ever as she had many different designers’ samples that were hand-selected. At the tale end of the sale, yellow patent girls’ ankle strap samples designed by Stella McCartney went for an incredible five bucks (original retail price was $120)! Zoe’s booth is probably the most diversified and she was not in the tent like the other designers—she had her own place in the back by the drink vendors. The tent had famous brands and not-so-famous brands of clothing—but one thing is certain: there was something for everyone. The most luxurious brands were St. John and high-end boutique brand handbag designer Love, Alex (Love, Alex’s sturdy and chic Orna bags were down to $150 from a retail price of $1,450 in the last half hour of Super Saturday.)
Some of the other brands with massive reductions were DKNY (who had the biggest booth), Il Gufo children’s clothing imported from Italy, Alexis Bittar designer jewelry made popular by Sex & The City, Talbot’s, Ramy Brook, Ralph Lauren, Original Penguin, Henri Bendel, J Brand Jeans, Karen Millen, Ruum American Kids’ Wear, Scoop NYC, Helmut Lang, Heidi Klein and about 50 more, Cosmetic and skincare companies includes Dr. Dennis Gross, Tarte, Super Smile and Hampton Sun.
