BlackFinn American Grille, which just opened up its first location in Houston, is known to be the great American restaurant and community gathering spot that serves classic comfort foods in a non-stuffy and casual environment. Just walking in made me want to kick off my heels and swig back one (or three!) of their cocktails (which, FYI, are all made with fresh-squeezed juices). Business mixes seamlessly with pleasure in this laidback space, where the wood-trimmed walls are filled with Houston sports and rodeo memorabilia offset by vibrant and contemporary oil on canvas paintings.
I started my meal with the creative and colorful Crab and Seaweed appetizer ($13), a layer cake like creation of lump crab meat and seaweed salad served on top a fried rice cake. The crisped-to-perfection rice cake was a perfect complement the chilled (and generously portioned!) crab chunks. I had to stop myself from eating this, because…
…I ordered the big-as-my-head Pan Fried Pork ($16) for my entrée. I know everything is bigger in Texas, but hot dog! (or should I pig?) -- this dish could honestly be shared by two people (though this porker is so good, you probably would want this all to yourself)!
For dessert, I got the Pineapple Upside Down Carrot Cake in an attempt to "be healthy" (pineapple and carrots in cake count as fruits and veggies right?). The playful spin on the traditional carrot cake was a welcome surprise to my tongue – and the light as air whipped cream cheese side was a perfect icing on the cake.
Blackfinn’s prices are super reasonable considering the portion size, and its rich yet approachable ambiance makes it a great place for an intimate business conversation over high quality comfort cuisine. I’ll definitely be back again and again until they do not make stretch pants in my size anymore!
